선운사 앞 동네 노래자랑은 신선한 충격이었다.
때문인지 지금도 가장 사랑하는 티비 프로그램은  "전국노래자랑"
컨츄리 음악은 그런 마음으로 들으면 제법 사랑스럽다.

@ Georgetown 대학

이 지구상에 영어가 마흔다섯 가지 정도 된다는 말이 있지. 말이 다른 각 나라마다 자기네 식으로 영어 발음을 하게 되는 거야. 이런 일화가 있어. 2차대전 후에 일본의 어떤 영어 학자가 일본의 국제화를 위해서 공용어를 영어로 바꿔야 한다는 주장을 하고 나섰어. 그 돌발적인 주장은 패전의 열등감에 빠져 있던 일본 사회에 큰 물의를 일으키게 되었지. 그런데 뜻밖에도 그 사람은 미국의 초청을 받았어. 뭐. 뜻밖일 것도 없는 일이지. 그때 패전 일본을 장악하고 있던 미국의 입장에서 볼 때는 스스로 그런 주장을 하고 나선 학자를 환영할 수밖에. 그 학자는 난생처음 미국에 가서 환대를 받으며 미국의 저명인사들을 모아놓고 강연을 하게 되었지. 물론 영어로 말야. 강연을 다 마치고 났는데 청중들이 하는 말이, '일본말도 우리말하고 좀 비슷한 데가 있는데 그래', '응, 그런것 같기도 하군' 이랬던 거야. 그 학자는 일본으로 돌아와 다시는 그 주장을 하지 않았다는 거야. 다른 나라 말을 하는데는 다 그런 한계가 있는 거니까 최선을 다해서 노력은 하되 그들과 똑같이 되지 않는다고 고민할 것 없어. 똑같아지려고 하는 건 망상*이고, 망상에 매달리는 건 어리석은 짓이니까 (조졍래, 한강 7권, 152쪽)

열심히 외국어를 공부하는 것은 그것 만으로 좋은 일이나 그 한계를 분명히 하는 것이 필요합니다.
* 망상 [妄想] <명사> 이치에 어긋나는 헛된 생각. 이것이 지나치면 병적인 것으로 되어 피해망상, 과대망상 따위의 정신이상이 일어난다.

in Washington D.C for conference during the weekend.

주말에 학회 참석을 핑계로 워싱턴 디씨에 다녀 왔습니다. 학회는 흥행에 성공을 했는지 그렇지 않은지는 잘 모르겠습니다.  일정을 요약하면, 토요일 밤엔Eva Cassidy의 씨디 자켓에서만 보던Blues Alley에서 Tuck & Patti의 공연 관람. 그 중에서 Tuck Andress가 연주하는 Europa가 제일 기억에 남습니다. 일요일  오후 - 동물원에 들러 팬더의 재롱을 구경하고 저녁엔 성당에 들러 저녁기도를 덤으로 참석하고 이어진 오르간 리사이틀을 제단 위의 성가대 자리에 앉아서 구경하고 자정이 넘어서 채플힐에 도착했습니다. 그리고 오늘은 마틴 루터 킹 주니어 목사 기념일이라서 집에서 쉬고 있는 중 입니다.



누구?



오후엔 이 넘 때문에 한참 웃었습니다. 곰을 좋아해서 동물원에 갈때면 항상 주의 깊게 지켜 보는 편인데 팬더는 처움 본 것이라 일반적인 경우인지는 모르겠지만 활동성이 뛰어나고 참 귀업더군요. 물론 야생에서 만나면 무섭겠지요. 관계는 없지만 지리산닷컴에서 본 지리산 반달곰 이야기가 생각 났습니다.

 
코끼리 방과 방 사이에 있는 코끼리 체중계 . 그러므로 코끼리를 냉장고에 넣는 방법도 매 한가지.
